Beej Bachao and Navadanya

Updated: Feb 12

Beej Bachao Andolan is a farmers' movement that originated in the Tehri district of Uttarakhand in India. The movement is focused on conserving traditional seeds and promoting ecological farming practices that do not rely on synthetic chemicals or genetically modified crops. The Beej Bachao Andolan is led by farmers who have come together to preserve the biodiversity of crops and protect the rights of small farmers who are often marginalized by the industrial agriculture system. The movement aims to promote seed sovereignty, which means the right of farmers to save, exchange, and use their own seeds without restriction or control by corporations.

Navadanya is a non-governmental organization based in India that was founded by environmental activist Vandana Shiva in 1991. The organization is focused on promoting biodiversity, seed sovereignty, and ecological agriculture practices. Navadanya operates a network of seed banks that preserve traditional seeds and promote community-based seed saving. The organization also works to promote sustainable farming practices and to protect the rights of small farmers and indigenous communities. Navadanya advocates for policies that support sustainable agriculture and oppose genetically modified crops and other industrial agriculture practices that harm the environment and undermine food security.
