The nature of the leaders of the 1857 Revolt can be summarized as follows:
Leadership and organization were necessary to fight the British, so rebels turned to those who had been leaders before the British conquest.
Sometimes, the leaders were people of the court, such as the Mughal emperor in Delhi, Nana Sahib in Kanpur, the rani in Jhansi, and Birjis Qadr in Awadh.
However, the leaders were not always people of the court, and sometimes the message of rebellion was carried by ordinary men and women, as well as religious leaders and self-styled prophets.
Local leaders also emerged, urging peasants, zamindars, and tribals to revolt.
The leaders of the revolt were from diverse backgrounds, including Jat cultivators, tribal cultivators, and maulvis.
The rebellion was not just against the British but also against all signs of oppression and injustice, including the revenue system, traders, and moneylenders.
Leaders like Shah Mal mobilized the headmen and cultivators of their areas, urging people to rebel against the British.
Maulvi Ahmadullah Shah was one of the many maulvis who played an important part in the revolt of 1857, moving from village to village preaching jehad (religious war) against the British and urging people to rebel.
