Who were the leaders of the Revolt?

The leaders of the 1857 Revolt were a diverse group of people who came from various backgrounds, including religious leaders, zamindars, taluqdars, and ordinary men and women. Some of the leaders were forced to join the rebellion by popular pressure, while others willingly took on the role of leadership. Here are some of the notable leaders of the 1857 Revolt:

  1. Bahadur Shah: One of the first acts of the sepoys of Meerut was to rush to Delhi and appeal to the old Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah, to accept the leadership of the revolt. Bahadur Shah initially rejected the offer but later agreed to be the nominal leader of the rebellion.

  2. Nana Sahib: In Kanpur, the sepoys and the people of the town gave Nana Sahib, the successor to Peshwa Baji Rao II, no choice but to join the revolt as their leader.

  3. Rani Lakshmi Bai: In Jhansi, the Rani was forced by popular pressure around her to assume the leadership of the uprising.

  4. Kunwar Singh: In Arrah, Bihar, Kunwar Singh, a local zamindar, was forced to assume the leadership of the revolt.

  5. Birjis Qadr: In Awadh, the populace in Lucknow celebrated the fall of British rule by hailing Birjis Qadr, the young son of the Nawab, as their leader.

  6. Maulvi Ahmadullah Shah: Maulvi Ahmadullah Shah was an important leader of the revolt. He was educated in Hyderabad and became a preacher when young. In 1856, he began preaching jehad against the British and urging people to rebel. He was popularly called Danka Shah - the maulvi with the drum.

  7. Shah Mal: Shah Mal mobilized the villagers of pargana Barout in Uttar Pradesh, urging people to rebel against the British. He attacked government buildings, destroyed the bridge over the river, and dug up metalled roads. He also set up an amazingly effective network of intelligence.
