Times they are a changing: Changes between 1893 and 1915

  • After completing his law from England, Gandhiji left India and reached Durban south Africa in 1893. He stayed in south Africa for 20 years fighting against racism and discrimination by the British and social Evils in migrant Indians. He returned India in 1915. The political scenario was very different in 1915 compared to 1893 when he left for South Africa.

  • In 1893, the India National Congress was still in nascent stage and its leaders were arguing about their political techniques to bargain with the British colonial government.

  • Swadeshi Movement: In 1905 Curzon, the viceroy of India, divide the Bengal province into two provinces, the west and the East BengaI. The Swadeshi and Bang-Bhang Movement erupted in Bengal which found huge support from other regions.

  • Rise of extremists: After the swadeshi movement a new group of leaders has emerged known as Extremists and revolutionaries. Main Extremists leaders were Bal Gangadhar Tilak in Maharashtra, Bipin Chandra pal in Bengal and Lala Lajpat rai in Panjab were. While moderate leaders were demanding for more Indians in legislative Councils and adopted constitutional ways to demand it, the extremists wanted the end of the colonial rule by adopting more radical methods.

  • Muslim league 1906: with the help of British government a separate organisation of Muslims.

  • Division in INC (1907): In 1907 at Surat session INC a split in the INC between moderates and extremists Occurred. After which till 1916 the INC became ineffective.

  • Minto-Morley reforms or the Indian councils Act 1909: This reform act Introduced the elections for Councils of Viceroy and provincial governors, Permitted the entry of Indians in these councils. This act also granted the separate electorates to Muslims.

  • Events between 1893 and 1915 shaped the Indian National Movement. when Gandhiji left India, Indian politics was in early stage. Indian political scenario has completely changed till 1915.When Gandhiji returned to India, the political environment was more active. However, the INC was inactive but many other groups were emerging and seeking a credible way to fight with the oppressive colonial rule.
