Mohandas to Mahatma : The South African Years

Historian Chandran Devensen has remarked " South Africa was the making of Mahatma". He went to south Africa in 1893 and stayed there for good 20 years.

  • During this time he not only established his legal practice but also started struggle for citizenship rights for Indian Immigrants and local black people. During this fight against the state, he developed his political techniques of Civil Disobedience and Non - Violent Satyagraha in South Africa.

  • In his political philosophy, he also emphasised on the communal harmony between religions, Better treatment towards Lower caste and Women,Need for cleanliness.

  • His political philosophy of community living, Atma Nirbhar (Self Reliance) village economy and Sarvodaya took shape here in South Africa.

  • All these are fundamental pillars of Gandhian political philosophy and that is why Chandran Devensen has remarked that "south Africa was the making of Mahatma"
