Krishna Deva Raya

Krishna deva Raya belonged to the Tuluva dynasty.

Krishna deva Raya’s rule was characterized by expansion and consolidation. This was the time when the land between the Tungabhadra and Krishna rivers was acquired.

He subdued the Gajapati rulers of Orissa (1514) and severe defeats were inflicted on the Sultan of Bijapur


Krishna deva Raya is credited with building some fine temples like The Vitthala Temple and Hazar Rama Temple. He added impressive Gopurams to many important south Indian temples.

He also founded a suburban township near Vijayanagara called Nagalapuram after his mother.

Some of the most detailed descriptions of Vijaynagar come from his time.




Krishnadevaraya, the king of the Vijayanagara Empire, reigned over most of South India in the 16th century. His rule extended over parts of present day Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Northern Tamil Nadu. Krishnadevaraya was born to Nagala Devi and Tuluva Narasa Nayaka. The Tulava dynasty was founded by Krishnadevaraya’s father and Krishnadevaraya was the third ruler in this dynasty.He built the Vithalaswamy temple and the Hazar Rama Temple in the Hoysala style of architecture. Krishnadevaraya won his greatest victory against the Bahmani Sultans. He annexed the Raichur Doab area and consolidated his position.
