Gandhi ji returned to India in 1915 after spending 20 years in South Africa where he founded his fundamental principles of Ahimsa and Satyagrah. India in 1915 was different from where he left it in 1893. Following major changes had changed India since then.

  1. When Gandhi ji left India, INC was still in its nascent state but in 1915, Congress has changed significantly.

  2. Rise of Extremists: Arvind Ghosh,Bipin Chanfra Pal, Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Lala lajpat rai, criticized INC for its comfortable Nationalism. From 1895 to 1907, The INC has divided into two groups called Moderates (Liberals) and Extremists. The extremists supported more active role of congress. Tilak’s Extremism gave rise to Revolutionary Ideas in Maharashtra. In 1908 Tilak was arrested and jailed.

  3. Bengal Divided and Swadeshi Movement: The viceroy of India Curzon decided to divide India’s Biggest and most prosperous state “Bengal” based on religion. He divided the state into two parts West Bengal and East Bengal. It provoked Bengal which gave rise to India’s first nationalist movement known as “Swadeshi Andolan”. This movement raised nationalist sentiments among Indians, which was absent when Gandhi ji left in 1893.

  4. Communal Politics also gained and supported by British Rule and it gave birth to the Muslim League in 1906 and Later Hindu Mahasabha.

  5. Return of Tilak – Home Rule League: In 1914, Govt released Tilak from mandale Jail and he returned India. He established Home rule league in 1916 and raised a parallel political infrastructure of League against INC.

  6. In 1914, First World War had started and Government imposed many wartime harsh rules in India. Gandhi Ji helped The British in Ambulance core. The Queen awarded him the title of Kaisar- E- Hind for his services.

  7. The Political Guru: Since Gandhi Ji was out of touch and was not aware about the political background, Gopal Krishna Gokhle suggested him to go on a tour of India. During this journey, Gandhi Ji understood the problems and realities of Indian Society.
